Compare ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 with Integrated Standards

ISO 9001 Certification commonly known as Quality Management System (QMS) is a systematical approach to satisfy customer requirements.

 ISO 9001 certification

ISO 14001 Certification Process is generally called as Environmental Management System (EMS) is a systematical approach to measure and improve the overall environmental impact. ISO 4001 Certification and ISO 9001 Certification have common Plan-Do-Check- Art Structure and basic similarities but differ in their alignment of clauses.
ISO 14001 certification

The most needed structure for both these standards is Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. In this cycle, an appropriate are among the standards exists. ISO 9001 Consulting Company operates Resource Management, Product recognition, Measure, Analyze and Improve, Responsible Management in PDCA cycle whereas,
ISO 14001 operates around Executing Environmental Policy, Checking and implementing its Operations for Review of management as the cycle. It looks different but the main top level names are replaced to match the similar requirements.

There are various requirements that are virtually similar in these, two standards done together to meet the requirements of both standards in one place:

Ø  Both needs an overall Policy as well as goals with common Targets (ISO 14001 adds Programmes).
Ø  Both require importance and supremacy to be noticed.
Ø  Both put a common significance on Capability, Practice and Perception.
Ø  Both have requirements for declaration, guidance of System Documents and Records.
Ø  Under monitoring and measurement, both require Non-acquiescence, Remedial and Preventive Action, and Private Audit.
Ø  Both require an Overall Management Review of the system.

With all of these basic common aspects, it looks logical to maintain one system for each common element. Why would you want a separate remedial and Preventive action system? Why would you not include checks for both systems during a Private Audit? Having one system for Capability, Training and Perception looks logical, and having an integrated system for Management Review would make a lot of sense.  The Common similarities between these, two standards allows you to have one documentation supreme procedure that covers both systems, and also allows you to have one private audit process that can review both systems at once.

Add ons of ISO 14001:-

There are very few important differences to make collaboration tough to understand. The fundamentals of ISO 14001 not included in ISO 9001.

·         Identifying and classifying the requirements.
·         Checking the Overall Legal requirements.
·         Emergency of prepare and Outcome.

These three elements requires complete new processes that are not implemented in a Quality Management System, but the inclusion of the processes should not decrease or confound the system already in place. There are no fundamental rivalries between the requirements, only inclusions to what would already be present.

Using standard unity to save time and money

By integrating the two management standards, there are many alliances that allow for integrated resources to save time and money on controlling and improving the entire management system.  The similarities allow processes already in place to be used with both Management Systems, while the few inclusive processes will not compete with processes already in place. The savings from collaboration can be found by using processes that are already in place, such as ISO Internal Audits for 14001 and 9001, to apply for both systems; one private auditor can audit both systems together with little additional cost in time or effort. The overall development of the cost of has an additional standard in your Management System is almost zero.
